MARÍA JOSÉ BUZÓN

Dr. Maria J. Buzon, Ph.D. has been involved in HIV for several years, with extensive training in
molecular biology and virology and a strong interest in translational research. She obtained her
PhD at the AIDS Research Institute, Irsicaixa in Barcelona, and her postdoctoral training at the
Ragon Institute of the Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT and Harvard, where after 3 years
she was promoted to Instructor in Medicine at the Harvard Medical School.

 

Her work on HIV persistence has been presented in several conferences and has been reflected in 46 peer-reviewed publications, including 15 articles as first author in high impact journals as Nature
Medicine, Nature Communications and Science of Translational Medicine, among others. She
also has contributed to innovation with 2 research patents.

 

Since 2015, Dr. Buzon is leading the “Translational Laboratory in HIV/STI” located in the Vall d'Hebrón Research Institute (VHIR) in Barcelona. Her research investigations are now focused on the characterization of new cellular
reservoirs, the identification of novel LRAs with different actions on CD4 subpopulations, and
the design of new immune-targeted approximations aimed at depleting the latent reservoir.

 

Dr. Buzon is a member of scientific committees for congresses (GeSIDA and the HIV Cure and
Reservoir Symposium) and a member of the BEAT-HIV Delaney Collaboratory Group
(International Study Group in HIV reservoirs).

 

In addition, she has been a recipient of several awards including the “CFAR Young Investigator Award” and the “International Raising Talents 2016” award from the L´Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science Foundation.
