MAYTE COIRAS

Dr. Mayte Coiras obtained her PharmD by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Spain and she did the pre-doctoral training at the Immunology Laboratory of the Department of Microbiology II of the Faculty of Pharmacy (UCM) until 2000, when she obtained her PhD in Immunology and Virology. Then she moved to the Respiratory Virus Unit at the National Center for Microbiology (CNM), Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII, Madrid).

 

She worked there for 3 years as a post-doctoral researcher in the development of new molecular techniques to detect and characterize Influenza and other respiratory viruses with pandemic potential as an essential part of the Influenza Surveillance System in Spain. She was awarded for the Best Scientific Oral Communication at the First European Influenza Conference, St. Julians, Malta in 2002. In 2003, she was hired as junior research scientist at the Immunopathology AIDS Unit, at the CNM (ISCIII), where she has been working since then. In 2008, she obtained a permanent position as Senior Research Scientist. According to the Web of Science, she has 44 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, most of them in the first quartile and as first or last author. Her works have been published in journals such as Nature Rev Microbiol, Cell Reports, Nucleic Acid Res, PloS Pathogens, Biochem Pharmacol, Proteomics, Retrovirology, and JBC.

As main research lines, she has been involved in the study of mechanisms for latency and reactivation of HIV, mainly in the analysis of the formation and maintenance of the viral reservoir, as well as in the immunopathologic processes that mediate the anergy and destruction of CD4+ T cells in patients infected with HIV. In recent years, her work has been focused on the discovery of new potential strategies to reduce the size of the reservoir during HIV infection, as well as on the study of the physiological mechanisms that induce the replacement and maintenance of the latent HIV reservoir. She has been coordinator of the HIV Reservoir work package of the Spanish AIDS Research Network since 2016.

She has been principal investigator of 13 research projects and she received an award for The Best Young Investigator from the Spanish Ministry of Health and the Foundation for Research and Prevention of AIDS in Spain (FIPSE) in 2011. She is currently Professor of Pharmacology at the European University of Madrid, as

well as Professor of the Master of Research in Infectious Diseases and Public Health at the University of

Alcalá (Madrid, Spain).
